Little Women (2019)

Little Women (2019) tells the dramatic story of a family and their young daughters, as they enter womanhood and the challenges, as well as the adventures they endure, during the 1860s.  Adapted from the 1868 novel of the same name, written by Louisa May Alcott, this 2019 film was directed by the multi talented Greta Gerwig, one of the best female figures in film today, and stars familiar faces and Hollywood powerhouses such as the criminally underrated Saoirse Ronan, Florence Pugh, Emma Watson, Timothée Chalamet, and Meryl Streep.

Through Gerwig’s unique way of nonlinear storytelling and creative use of monologues, the film is elevated to another level, as the audience is forced to pay attention, but makes that an easy goal through its creative approaches and intriguing storyline.  This is a feel good film that makes you want to cry, but with one change of a scene it makes you laugh.  With each sister portraying different approaches towards life, one a writer, one a teacher, one a musician, and one wanting to marry rich, therefore making unique decisions, you understand how they live their lives and see why they act in the ways they do, although it may be, at times, frustrating for viewers.  The film is consistently satisfying all throughout its 2 hour and 15 minute run time.
Towards the third act of the film, through quick paced decision making by the main characters and the introduction of side characters, it can feel a bit rushed and as a result the ending can not feel as satisfying as it should.  All in all this film is truly a cinematic feat by means of its fresh and contemporary approach to a classic story, not only this, but the writer/director, Gerwig, was the only female nominated for an adapted screenplay at the 2020 Academy Awards.

This film is a well-deserved 9.5/10 and is sure to make audiences respect this work of art, through its captivating emotions.
